Fighting Invasive Species

How can invasive species be stopped?

Invasive species represent one of the greatest economic, social and environmental threats of our century. Prosopis juliflora (a type of mesquite), introduced in Kenya under international afforestation development programmes, has become one of the most threatening invasive tree species in the region, affecting soil quality, water resources and biodiversity. As P. juliflora spreads over vast and difficult to access areas, it is very difficult to prevent and contain it before it is too late. This incubator project aims to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to monitor the actual spread and risks of future contamination using satellite imagery. The data generated will then feed into the formulation of a national strategy against P. juliflora and will be used on the ground to combat further advance.
